The email started as a careful explanation. By the third paragraph, it had become the first honest account of what the last six months had felt like. I read it twice and knew every word was true.
Then I remembered who controlled the next opportunity. I softened the language, removed the examples and eventually deleted the whole thing. The next morning I replied with two polite sentences and a thank you.
Nobody at work knew how angry I was because I had become very good at making restraint look like calm. The message disappeared, but the feeling came home with me.
