People love to say you should speak up when something is wrong. They rarely mention what speaking up can cost when your salary is holding an entire household together.
I heard the decision, knew it was unfair and watched the room wait for somebody to challenge it. I said nothing. Silence was not agreement. It was the price of making rent that month.
I am not proud of staying quiet, but I am no longer ashamed either. Courage looks different when the consequences are not theoretical. I started planning my exit instead of offering a sacrifice nobody else would have to carry.
