I worked for the promotion for years. When it finally came, my family celebrated, my friends told me they were proud and I changed my title everywhere before the week was over.
What I did not say was that the role came with constant availability, unclear authority and the quiet expectation that I would absorb every problem without showing strain. I kept thinking I only needed more time to grow into it.
Eventually I had to admit that success on paper was making my actual life smaller. Leaving the role felt like failure until I understood that a title is not progress if it costs you the parts of yourself you were working to protect.
The stories are anonymous. The feelings are not.
A guided reflection
Can a promotion still be progress if it takes more than it gives?
